The Krishna Pushkaram was celebrated this year in Vijayawada. Apart from the grand festival, vijayawada has numerous famous temples and caves that have survived through centuries around beautiful scenic areas.

This event occurs every twelve years, and is observed for a period of 12 days. This year the event was from 12th to 23rd August. It involves pilgrims gathering from all over the world, spiritual discourses, celebrations with devotional music and cultural programs. Vijayawada is the place for any traveller to be right now, especially if you have a spiritual interest in the festival. Either way, Vijayawada is a place full of history and awesome architecture, and it has tourist spots that would be a sin to miss.

Bhavani Islands

Named after Goddess Durga, the Bhavani Island is one of the largest river islands in India. It is located in the middle of the Krishna River, at the upstream of the Prakasam Barrage. It is a pleasant and beautiful boat ride, and you should not miss out on it if you are seeking adventure.

Prakasam Barrage is a dam that stretches across 1.2 km of the Krishna River. It is a popular tourist destination, because of its structure and scenic location that overlooks a lake. It also has a road bridge from where you can witness the true beauty of the river.

Situated only 6 km away from Vijayawada, are the finest examples of Indian rock-cut architecture. These caves have centuries of culture trapped in them, with carvings in sandstone dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries AD. Originally the caves were a Jain monastery, and also have Buddhist artefacts; but were later converted to offer tribute to the Hindu gods. Even if you are not a history buff, you surely should surely visit these caves once in your lifetime.

Kondapalli Fort

A one hour drive away from Vijayawada. This historic fort was built during the 14th century. It has been a theatre for several wars between the rulers of North and South India, and also against the British. The main entrance is built of a single block of granite, named ‘Dargha Darwaja’ after Gulab Shah’s tomb, who was killed in battle here. The palace, other than its awesome granite structure also has a deep reservoir, which has water said to be so cold it causes fever. It definitely makes a very interesting trip.

Victoria Jubilee Museum

Located on M.G Road, it was created as a part of the celebrations of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887. It is an archaeological museum with a large collection of sculptures, paintings and artefacts of Buddhist and Hindu relics. Some of the relics even date back to 2nd and 3rd centuries and they are a must visit for any history enthusiast.
