Also, there are a number of hammocks by the beach and the tourists can simply relax there. Also known as the Papanasham Beach, this beach is one of the most beautiful beaches of the state. The beach is adjacent to the Arabian Sea and the cliffs here especially noteworthy. They are of tertiary sedimentary formation and are known as the Varkala rock formation. According to Geological Survey of India, they are a geological monument. One of the most famous attractions of the beach is the 10 day long festival held at the Janardhan Swami Temple, known as Arattu. The distance between Alleppey to Varkala is 117 km via NH 66 and makes for a great driving experience with beautiful scenery on all sides.
