Eat, Pray And Enjoy: Guide For A Blissful Stay at Amritsar

Amritsar is among India’s oldest and most fascinating cities. Located in the northern state of Punjab, it is a haven for foodies, a shopping paradise, and the home to the famous Golden Temple. You will feel alive in all parts of India, but Amritsar best exemplifies it in one of the best ways. Here are some of the best reasons to visit Amritsar with your family and friends for a blissful stay!

Eat Delicious Food in Amritsar

While walking through the crowded streets, you’ll notice delicious smells like garlic, fresh fruit juices, fried street food, flowers, the pucker-inducing flavour of sour chats, chai and sweet lassi blending.

What can you do in Amritsar?

  • Visit the Golden Temple:

Sikhs from all over the world travel to Amritsar in particular to see Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple. Everyone is welcome here, regardless of caste, colour, race, or religion; it symbolises equality. The square-shaped temple grounds have four gates on each side, signifying the idea that the gates are open to people from all backgrounds. The temple grounds are available 24 hours a day, and they are equally beautiful during the day as at night. However, the golden temple visiting hours are from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm.

The pool surrounding the iconic, glittering temple gave the city its name. It is both a major tourist destination and a spiritual centre for the Sikh faith; however, you must cover your head and remove your shoes before entering the premises.

There are several places to visit near the golden temple. Here are a few places you can visit for a wonderful experience.

  • Jallianwala Bagh:

The famous Jallianwala Bagh is just one kilometre from the Golden Temple. It is the public ground where the British Army committed the heinous act of public massacre. The incident happened on April 13, 1919, the day of the Punjabi New Year. On this auspicious day, British occupying forces mercilessly opened fire on a peaceful crowd, leaving about 379 people dead and about 1100 others injured. A memorial was built in 1951 to remember the massacre at this location. Today, every visitor to Punjab pays respects at a sizable memorial stone in Jallianwala Bagh.

  • Wagah Border:

One of the must-visit tourist attractions near the Golden Temple in Amritsar is Wagah Border, which has become a firm favourite with Indian visitors. It is the only border crossing by road that separates India and Pakistan, and it is about 30 kilometres from the Golden Temple. This location is highly valued because of the Beating Retreat and Change of Guard ceremony. As the soldiers from both nations show their genuine love for their homelands, the nationalistic sentiment among the spectators reaches its zenith by afternoon.

  • Akal Takht:

As a place of justice and temporal issue resolution, Guru Hargobind Sahib constructed a Sikh temple on the grounds of the Golden Temple. It is regarded as the Khalsa’s highest position of earthly power. Akal Takht, which translates as “throne of the timeless one,” represents the Sikhs’ political dominance.

Besides these famous places, you can always visit the Harike Wetland and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum for an adventurous vacation.
