Explore Thrissur: Cultural Capital of Kerala

Thrissur is also known as the cultural capital of Kerala due to its cultural, spiritual, and religious trends throughout history. Thrissur has historically been a centre of Hindu science. The city is home to one of the most revered temples of Hindu Shaivism, the Vadakunnathan Temple. Apart from being the cultural nerve centre of Kerala, it is also an influential educational centre that houses several educational institutions.

Let us explore one of the best cities to visit in autumn – Thrissur:

Thrissur Pooram:

Thrissur Pooram, also known as the Festival of Festivals, has a tradition of 200 years. Saktan Thampuran, the ancient ruler of Kochi, is the initiator of this wonderful festival. Events related to the festival are held at the Vadakkumnathan Temple in central Thrissur and the nearby Tekkinkadu complex in Moolam star during the Malayalam month of Medam (April-May). This event is marked by the Kudamattom ceremony and features several colourful elephants.

Another highlight is the Ilanjitara Melam, a mesmerising performance with traditional instruments that leave thousands in a state of joy and happiness. The energy of the chenda, kurumkujal, kombu, and elthalam is shared by thousands of spectators as they clap their hands to the rhythm generated by the chenda, kurumkujal, kombu, and elthalam (traditional instruments of Kerala). A spectacular fireworks display marks the end of the concert.

Kerala Kalamandalam:

For decades, Kerala Kalandalam was considered the world’s most famous school of Kathakali. Located in Cheruturithi, this historic art school was founded by Vallathol Narayana Menon, a renowned Malayalam poet. Kalandalam, which started functioning under the governments of Kochi and Kerala, is now managed by the Ministry of Culture, Government of Kerala.

Kathakali, Mohiniyattom, Kutiyattam, Thulal, Chutti, Chamayam, Mrudangam, Mijavu, Carnatic music, Kerala instrumental music, and other significant subjects are taught. In addition, Kalandalam has troops who perform. Seeing concerts in these holy places is an enthralling experience.

Thrissur Zoo:

The famous Thrissur Park, which dates back to 1885, is located in the heart of the city. Its appeal has increased with the regular addition of unusual species. Paranormal shows here are interesting and held every day except Monday. Lion-tailed macaques, sloth bears, many species of birds and deer, as well as giant king cobras, pythons, and snakes, will delight you in this amazing place.

Heritage Garden:

This heritage garden in the city’s heart is known for housing many rare plant species. It is a manicured park that is a popular picnic spot for locals and visitors alike. That garden is part of the grounds of Tamburan Palace. This is a large and peaceful place where the tomb of Tambura, the king of this region, is located.

There are many trees in the garden and other flowering or unusual plants. In the middle of the garden, there is a fountain that takes you back to the times of royal kingdoms with shipshape gardens and the beautiful lake opposite the garden. There is a seating area for guests to relax and have fun.

Vilangan Kunne:

Vilangan Kunnu, also known as the ‘Oxygen Bottle’ of Thrissur, is a lush green oasis with an abundance of flora and fauna. The site now has various new facilities, including fun attractions for children. This quiet hill welcomes you with more than 13 exciting rides, including a pedal pool and a cartwheel. The 16D theatre is one of the most prominent features here. It has 180-degree swivel seats.

You can enjoy the waterfalls, feel the snow and even breathe the smells without leaving your place. Kunnu is a great place to meet friends and family for a night out. You can marvel at the breathtaking beauty of the darkness as you walk in the cool air among the swaying greenery.

Thumboormuzhi Garden:

Thumboormuzhi Butterfly Garden is a natural habitat for butterflies with around 148 species. Rare and small butterflies can be seen as well as some large ones. Pagoda flowers, Mexican geyser, rattlesnake, rubica, flame lily, and other plants are also on display.
