Exploring India’s Spiritual Cities During Ram Navami

Ram Navami is a joyful celebration of the birth of Maryada Purushottam Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This Hindu festival is widely popular in India and attracts tourists worldwide to witness lively celebrations. Held on the 9th day of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month, devotees chant “Jai Shree Ram” and offer prayers to Lord Rama and his family.

Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh

The city of Ayodhya holds a special place in Hindu mythology as it is said to be the birthplace of Lord Rama. Thus, it is no wonder that the city of Ayodhya celebrates the birth of Rama with great devotion and passion. 

 

On this day, the people of Ayodhya decorate their homes and observe fasts while taking a dip in the sacred Sarayu River. They also visit temples and participate in religious rituals. There are colourful fairs and procession of chariots featuring Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman. Many temples and households hold Satsang events to mark the occasion.

On this day, the festival is observed as the wedding anniversary of Lord Rama and Sita, also known as ‘Sitaram Kalyana’. The celebrations in Bhadrachalam last for nine days, with Navami being the final day, which coincides with the sacred union of Rama and Sita. Large crowds gather at the temple to witness the grand and ceremonial wedding ceremony performed on Rama Navami.

 

Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu

Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu is another destination where Rama Navami is celebrated with great zeal. According to the Ramayana, Lord Rama and his army of monkeys, led by Hanuman, built the famous bridge, “Ram Setu,” to reach Sri Lanka, where Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana. 

 

On this day, devotees participate in Rama and Sita’s wedding ceremony, chanting his name and fasting. The Rameshwaram Temple is particularly famous, as it is believed to be where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to purify himself of the Brahmahatya incurred from killing Ravana; it is one of the top sightseeing spots in India.

 

Vontimitta, Andhra Pradesh

Vontimitta, a small town in Andhra Pradesh, is known for its passionate celebration of Rama Navami. The city is famous for its 450-year-old Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple, built by two robbers turned devotees of Lord Rama, Vontudu, and Mitrudu. 

 

The Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple is the place for celebrating the Rama Navami celebrations, organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. The festival is celebrated as part of the 9-day annual Bramhotsavam and features a range of cultural activities, including the grand wedding ceremony of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita.
