Exploring Jim Corbett National Park: A Comprehensive Travel Guide

Initially named ‘Hailey National Park’, Jim Corbett National Park was set up in Nainital, Uttarakhand, in 1936 to protect the Bengal tigers. It was named after the popular British officer and hunter Jim Corbett. The park is fit for an Eco tour with a wonderful view of nature. There are two buffer zones, Sonanadi and Pakhro and five safari zones: Dhikala, Bijrani, Jhirna, Dhela and Durga Devi Zone. The park is mainly known for its lush green environment.

If you visit the park, you can catch sight of the Royal Bengal Tiger, Deer, Otter, Asiatic Black Bear, Sambar Deer, and Sloth. The park has about 600 different species of trees planted. How to Reach the Jim Corbett National Park?

  • By Road– Buses are available for transportation to the park. Many public buses connect the park to nearby cities. Besides a bus, you can also book a commercial car from Delhi or any other city.
  • By train- The nearest railway station to the park is Ramnagar railway station, where trains connected to places like Delhi, Lucknow, Haridwar, and Varanasi arrive. A taxi stand near the station provides transportation to the national park. The taxi costs approximately ₹ 1000/-.
  • By Air- The nearest airport to the park is Pantnagar, approximately 60 km away. A 267-kilometre drive from Shimla Airport will also get you here. New Delhi is the nearest international airport to Corbett National Park, about 260 km.

What are the Entry Fees and Timings?

The entry fee is ₹ 200/- per person for Indians (approx) and ₹ 900/- per person for foreigners (approx). The timings differ from season to season. During the summer season, you can avail the safari service from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. During winter, the timing changes from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

March is considered the best month to visit Jim Corbett National Park. However, you can also consider visiting the park between November and June. The summers are usually hot, and the temperatures can sometimes rise to 40 degrees. The park’s monsoon season is also intense, with the submerged Dhikala and Birjani zones. You can explore the park by hiring a Gypsy/Jeep, which has a capacity of 6 people per safari, or a Canter Safari, which is the most convenient for group travellers as it can take 16 people at a time. You can also book an Elephant Safari if there are four people.

The Jeep safari costs from ₹1000-5000/- depending on your nationality; on the other hand, the elephant safari costs ₹300/- for Indians and ₹1000/- for foreigners. The canter safari costs around ₹1600/- for Indians and ₹3200/- for foreigners.
