As per Hindu folklore, Lord Hanuman is the most powerful deity with unmatchable strength and compassion for his devotees.

Some Facts About Lord Hanuman that You Must Know

With a life so extraordinary, the stories of his bravery are known to many. In this article, we bring you some lesser-known facts about Shree Hanuman.

Not His Birth Name

When he was born, Lord Hanuman was named Maruti. It is said that baby Maruti mistook the sun as a fruit and ran at full speed to grab it. A lightning bolt from Indra then struck him. It left baby Maruthi with an injured cheek and jaw, hence, the name Hanuman was given to him, which means disfigured jaw.

Cursed by a Sage

As a child, Hanuman ji troubled and teased the sages in all innocence. Once during such innocent teasing, a sage cursed Shree Hanuman to forget all his divine powers. When little Hanuman apologised to the sage, he altered his curse by saying he would remember his powers only when someone reminded him. As seen in Ramayana, Hanuman ji remembered his powers when Jambhavantha reminds him of them.

The Reason Behind the Orange or Red Colour of the Idol

Once when Hanuman ji asked Sita why she used sindoor. She informed him saying that it represents the long life, safety, love and devotion of Shree Ram. Hanuman ji loved Rama so much that he covered his body with vermilion believing that doing so would ensure the safety of Lord Rama. Due to this reason, several temples have orange or red Hanuman idols.

He Had a Son

Even though Hanuman ji was a Brahmachari, he fathered a son. It is believed that when Hanuman’s tail was on fire after the battle of Lanka, he dipped it in the sea to cool off. The sweat from his body was ingested by a fish that later gave birth to Makardhwaja.

Panchamukhi Hanuman

When Shree Ram and Lakshman were kidnapped by demon king Ahiravana, Hanuman discovered that he had to extinguish five candles simultaneously to kill the demon. So Hanuman took the form of Panchamukhi, meaning five heads. In the centre was Hanuman, the south had a lion’s face, the west had an eagle’s head, the North had the head of a boar, and facing the sky was the head of a horse.

The Scholar Hanuman

Although famous for his strength and courage, few know that Hanumanji was a learned scholar. His teacher was the Sun God, Surya. He was accomplished in Vedas and Tantras as he displayed powers such as Anima, Mahima, Laghima, Garima, Prapti, Parakamya, Vastiva, and Isitva.

Not many people know that Hanuman ji was a Yogi. In fact, he invented Surya Namaskar to greet and salute his teacher, Surya. He was also the first one to introduce the world to Pranayamas.
