Mumbai is known as the city which never sleeps and is considered to be one of the most populous cities of India. So it can be hard to believe that this city has its fair share of haunted places and as a result no one ever ventures there or if they must, they are extremely cautious about it. The stories and lores about why these places are haunted make for a wonderful round table gossip session around over a cup of hot chai. Here are some of the horror places in Mumbai and you are sure to have goosebumps as you read about them:
Located in the region of Mahim, D’Souza Chawl is one of the many haunted places in the region. There are of course, others. It is said that a women fell into a well here and faced an untimely death after which her spirit haunts the chawl. Her spirit is set to torment the local residents after dark and many of them still do not venture out alone at night after the sun sets.
The Aarey Milk colony is a region which is often plagued by petty crimes and even leopards. However, the residents here are most worried about the paranormal activities which often take place here. The entire 10 km stretch has been witness to all kinds of specters and visions and it is said a woman in a white saree is often seen asking for lift at the dead of night. However, she tends to become violent soon after and there are other incidents pertaining to crying babies and a disappearing old man.
Mukesh Mills was in the grasp of a deathly fire in 1870 and it is said that thousands of mill workers were burnt alive. Later, this deserted mill had served as a shooting spot for many Bollywood films and some of them quite famous like Om Shanti Om. A fire had broken out in the mills and since then it has become a hotspot for haunted shoots. Everyone is quite afraid to enter the compounds of the mill after dark and many people have seen uncomfortable sights here.
Tower of Silence is located in the Malabar Hills and it is the place where the body of a deceased person is left in the open so that vultures can feed on it. It is said that the Zoroastrianism believes that this is the way in which a dead body is presented from polluting the soil. It is said that the earth and fire are polluted when they come in touch with a dead body and in this way that can be prevented. While the idea of imagining that there is a tower full of dead bodies where vultures feed on, sometimes it is said that strange sounds are heard from within.
If you are someone who loves things to be eerie and adventurous, then this is the place. This national park is known for lurking wild animals and old caves that can be explored in daytime but it is said that this is also the place where a woman clad in white sari tries to get a lift from passing passengers. While some might give no importance to this story, it is said that both the guards as well as the locals have seen something like this happening. The Kanheri Caves inside the park is the most haunted of all.
Vrindavan Society happens to be a very posh address in Mumbai but it also happens to be quite haunted. The residents will tell you all sorts of stories about this place. It is said that a man once committed suicide here and since then his soul has been haunting the residents. Guards are told to be slapped by the spirit and many residents have also seen strange things happening in the society.
Nasserganj Wadi is located near the Mahim railway station and it was here that a Parsi man called Nasser was burnt alive. It is said that he still keeps a watch on his property and haunts anyone who tries to enter it or obstructs his path. It is one of the most haunted places in Mumbai.
The road that stretches between Marv and Madh Island is indeed very scenic but it is also happens to be full of paranormal activities. The road is full of greenery and lush surroundings but is said to be very haunted as a young bride is said to haunt it. There has been an unusual number of accidents in this area and it is said that it is all because of her as she happens to come across suddenly before the cars.
Bombay High Court is quite a landmark in the city and an important historical location but it is also said to be very haunted. A spirit happens to roam its corridors and a bilingual one at that and it is said that he torments people whenever there is a murder trial taking place. This has been happening for the past thirty years or so and it is said that the spirit is of a man who was himself wrongly accused of murder and was given a death sentence.
This beautiful church located in Andheri is very beautiful but it has a grim history. The church was built way back in 1579 but was later abandoned around 1840 after a epidemic in which many people died. Since then, the local people had been harassed by the spirits and to get rid of them, an exorcism was also performed in the year 1977 of which there are terrible incidents narrated as well. It is said that the witnesses had heard terrible shrieking and a splash in a nearby pond after which all the fish of the pond were found dead the following day. There is another story where a young bride purported her own death and her spirit roams the empty church as well.
Grand Paradi Towers is located in the posh region of Malabar Hills and it is said that an unusual number of suicides have taken place here. The building was constructed in 1970s and many of the flats are still vacant which is quite a thing because in a city like Mumbai who hardly ever get an empty space. It is said that about 20 people have jumped to their death from this building and many of them were also from the same family. A number of pujas had been held to ward off the spirits but all to no avail.
Located in Worli, this is a very haunted place as after the 1993 bomb blasts, several people had died here after the wall collapsed. A number of people had died after being trapped under the rubble. A number of stories started doing the rounds and the night watchmen had seen much to scare them. It is a very haunted house in Mumbai.
Taj Mahal Hotel is a magnificent hotel in Mumbai but is also said to be haunted, albeit by a harmless ghost. It is said that the hotel’s chief architect committed suicide because of a glitch during the construction of the hotel and that his spirit still roams the specific areas. However, he never causes any trouble!
It would seem that Mahim is the most haunted part of the city. This building also happens to be located behind Paradise Cinema in Mahim and it is said that a 50 year old woman fell into the well in the building’s compound 20 years ago. It is said that her spirit makes an appearance on the nights of full moon. It is not a place to venturing out in the dark.
Santa Cruz, one of the most visited places in Mumbai is haunted by the spirit of a woman who is known as “second floor ki Bhabiji” as the residents are too scared to utter her name. She had a bad fight with her husband and committed suicide and since then a black dog has made the second floor his home. It is said that he barks whenever the spirit makes an appearance.
It is said that it was here that in 1989, a 20 year old woman called Salma had set herself ablaze here. No one knows the reason why, but since then people have often seen a girl on fire running into a Peepal tree. A temple of Lord Hanuman has been constructed in the area to protect themselves from harm but it is still seen on dark night that a blazing girl is running into a peepal tree.
In the old building of SNDT College it is said that at 2:00 am on most nights, a woman is heard reciting multiplication tables followed by sounds of slapping and children crying. A group of boys had tried investigating but they had been unable to find anything. Later, however, the sounds had continued and no one goes there at night.
These haunted places of Mumbai are sure to send shivers down your spine as you visit them, that it if you are the daring type. Or else it is best to steer clear of them it seems!
