It is at a very close distance to Ooty. For nature lovers, there are abundant wide open shola forests and grassy meadows on its way. The top of the mountain surprises travellers with exhilarating views of Bandipur National Park and open grasslands of Coimbatore and Mysore. Trekking is very common in this beautiful range and many trails are available for the same with requiring no special trekking equipment.

Doddabetta Peak is located at an altitude of 2,637 meters (8,650 feet) above sea level which is the highest in South India. There is another attraction at the top – the telescope house which houses two telescopes for a better panoramic view of the entire region.

Doddabetta peak is at a distance of 9 km from Ooty, on the Ooty Kotagiri road and you can hop on to a taxi or bus to reach here. Trekking time is from 9 am to 6:30 am and the entry fees is Rs 6 per person and Rs 5 for kids. Cameras are charged at around Rs 10 to 50.

2. Anamudi Peak, Kerala

The highest peak in the Western Ghats in South Asia among all peaks in western ghats, Anamudi peak is located in Kerala. It has a height of about 8842 feet (2695 metres) above sea level. The place has also earned the name of “Himalayas of the South”. It is a major tourist attraction for Munnar hill station. It is filled with outstanding wildlife of Eravikulam National Park. It is a majestic place to travel with picturesque views and romantic ambience. Wide open spaces, dramatic, mountains and pristine forests make the place a true gem.

Transport to this place is easily available from Munnar to Eravikulam National Park. The peak is located inside the park itself so it shall be sufficient if you reach the Eravikulam National Park.

3. Kolaribettea peak

It is the second highest peak of the Nilgiri Peak. It is located in Tamil Nadu at a close distance to Ooty. It has a height of about 8,629 feet (2630 metres). The place is full of lush green tropical trees and forests and amazing wildlife. The peak gives an astounding view of the surrounding valleys and high mountains giving you a surreal experience of a lifetime. This place is a must visit during October to January when you can experience all the attributes of the place with a comfortable stay.

The peak is 28 lm away from Ooty and the best possible way is to hire a local taxi to reach the place. An entry fee of Rs 5 per person is charged which is much less compared to others.

4. Mukurthi Peak

One of the spectacular mountain ranges of Tamil Nadu, Mukurthi Peak lies at an altitude of 8,304 feet that is 2554 metres above sea level. It lies amidst Nilgiri forests, close to Ooty. The mountain offers exquisite landscapes and jaw dropping views from pristine sunsets to beautiful panoramic view of the locality. It also offers great wildlife experience such as the Nilgiri Tahr and Nilgiri Marten. Thick shola forests line the place along with Rolling Meadows and grasslands. Nearby is the New Amarambalam Wildlife Sanctuary which is very close that attracts huge number of tourists every year.

Mukurthi Peak is at a distance of 45 km west from Ooty, and you can easily reach the place  in a private taxi, or can hop on the local government bus, if they travel up to the place.

5. Vandaravu Peak

Near the border of Kerala, lies this beautiful peak Vandaravu Peak at an altitude of 8,310 feet (2,533 metres). It is one of the highest mountain peaks of South India and is a huge attraction for tourists across the country and the globe. Beautiful coffee plantations are on view as you walk and trek on this mountain giving an amazing aroma of exotic India. Dense tropical forests, cascading beautiful waterfalls, exotic and scintillating valleys, white fleecy clouds coupled with the beautiful location of the Western Ghats, it is an absolute delight. It is nearby to Munnar and Kodaikanal which are also great tourist spots for visitors.

To reach the place, you can easily book a taxi from Munnar as it is only at a distance of 45 km from here. Moreover, Kurangini Hills Trekking is 18 km walking distance but is more than 100 km via road. Pampadum Shola National Park is also at an 8 km trekking distance from Vandaravu Peak Point.
