Who doesn’t love walking through a snow capped terrain atop a misty mountain? Indrahar Pass which forms the border between the Chamba and Kangra districts of Himachal Pradesh is such an awe-inspiring sight that even the steeliest would melt at its charisma.
It is the perfect place to admire the majestic Dhauladhar range and the few sleepy hamlets which grace the ridges below. The varying altitude of the entirety of the trekking trail will keep you vividly engrossed in the beatific scenery adorning the different forest ranges, which vary according to the difference in altitude along the way. The amazing view from the pass is something which surely is going to keep you engrossed through the entirety of the trek.
The ideal time to undertake an Indrahar pass trek are the months of May and June and September and October. The monsoon season is a dangerous time because of the frequent landslides which occur in the region. Moreover the summer heat is not at all present there and hence is a perfect summer getaway. The autumn season would enable the trekkers to enjoy the cool icy breeze and enjoy the unique experience of Himalaya trekking.
You can go to Dharamshala and from there to Mcleodganj to start the trek. Dharamshala easily accessible by air, road and rail. So reaching Dharamshala shouldn’t be a problem. From there you can get cabs to go to Mcleodganj.
Situated on the lap of Dhauladhar range and spanning over varying altitudes Indrahar pass has a floral diversity to compete with almost any other place in the entire world. The trekking trail is fairly easy to follow and safe except for the few boulder prone regions which are a little perilous and must be treaded on with utmost caution.
The panoramic view at most parts of the pass is intoxicating enough to make you forget all worries and enjoy nature without a care in the world. The alpine forests and misty mountains present a great sensation of being on top of the world, away from all the din and hustle, it feels like being far from the madding crowd.
This simple and charming hill is reached after a moderate trek of 9 kms from Mcleodganj. The Bhagsu village, Dharamsala valley and the Mcleodganj valley adorn the scenery along the trek. Some parts of the trek offer distant views of the Kangra plains while some parts showcase the Shivalik ranges at a great distance. The quiet and peaceful trek takes you to the top of the hill which resembles a lush green meadow in the season of Autumn. The Dhauladhar range looms over the place and offers an enchanting skyline. This hill is also used as the base camp for mountaineers attempting to climb the Inderahara Peak.
Situated near Mcleodganj, this is the perfect spot to watch the mighty Himalayas in all its glory. This viewpoint offers the perfect site for enjoying the calm and serenity of the mountains and valleys and offers a marvelous respite from the regular humdrum.
This waterfall is situated near the Bhagsu Village which gets its name from the local deity of Bhagsunag which is a form of Shiva. There is a majestic temple at a short distance from the village. The Bhagsu waterfalls are located about five minutes away from the temple and fall within Indrahar pass trek length. The enchanting waterfalls present a holistic view of the forests around and the mountains atop.
Tibetan museum is one of the popular places to visit in Mcleodganj . It falls right at the beginning of the trek. People interested in knowing the history of the country of Tibet, their plights, migration to India and so on must visit this place as it gives a view as comprehensive as any.
Dubbed as the ‘little Lhasa of Tibet’ the temple complex is the home to the 14th Dalai Lama. Complete with the beautiful prayer wheels, murals and cultural conglomeration of India and Tibet this temple is a place where you can find spiritual peace and be free of all the woes that this life has on offer. The calm and peaceful environment also offers the perfect start to the arduous trekking in Himachal ahead.
This gompa is built as a replacement of the original Dip Tse Chokling Gompa which was destroyed at the time of the Cultural Revolution of Tibet. A beautifully bejeweled statue of Shakya muni adorn the inside of the gompa.
One of the fifty two Shaktipeeth temples, legend has it that the tongue of Sati fell on this spot. The eternal flames or ‘9 jwalas’ supposedly burn without any oil or base. A holy pilgrimage site for Hindus, this temple is situated a bit off the trek but is definitely worth a visit due to its mystical elements and beauty.
One of the most picturesque sights on the trail route is the Kareri Lake or the Kumarvah Lake. This shallow, freshwater lake is situated at a height of 2934 mts. The pristine water makes the lake bed visible at most places. Situated at the base of the Dhauladhar range enables it to be fed by snow melt water and keep its pristine condition. Birds flock in numbers at this lake at all times making it a refreshing sight.
If you are an adventurous person who loves wandering off the beaten track then you should take an Indrahar pass solo trek. Adventures at every turn mean the beginning of stories for a lifetime. But if you want peace and comfort then sadly this isn’t for you. This is a high-on-adrenaline trip where you get up close and personal with nature in all its dangerously intoxicating beauty. So best of luck wanderer! Pack a bag, leave everybody behind and go find yourself amongst the magical forests and cascading waterfalls atop the snowy mountains in Indrahar Pass.
