Located about 54 km from Alibaug, the fort is spread over a total area of 22 acres and was originally a wooden structure. It was later renovated and given its present form by Sidi Suri in the 17th century. The stone cutting in the main passage is a sight to behold and there are six elephants and tiger here that are really life size. There are 23 bastions in all and they are all about 30 to 40 feet high and still very much strong. There are also a number of guns, of which the main ones are named Kalal Bangadi, Landa Kasam, and Chavi. There is also a small door towards the ocean, which was used as an escape during invasions. There is no entry fee here.
If you love the sea, then you have to visit Alibaug Beach. It is one of the prime tourist attractions here and a major picnic spot in Alibaug. You can catch a glimpse of the wonderful Colaba fort from here and one can also take a boat ride to the fort. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Ganesh which is 400 years old and you can simply while away your time here by drinking coconut water and eating Vada Pav. The beach can be reached easily from Mumbai by a ferry.
The cool breeze and the beautifully dreamy ambiance in the evenings is what defines Kihim Beach. The shore is wonderful because the waters here are very clear and considered perfect for swimming. The shore is known especially for its great Indian restaurants which sell a variety of food items, most of them vegetarian. The Kihim Shore is 12 km from ST Stop. You can witness a large number of flora and fauna here including some rare species of butterflies.
For those who cannot get enough of the sea, Murud Beach should be the next destination and this beach is quite unique because of the presence of Black Sand. Those who are on the lookout for exciting places in Alibaug will love this place, especially adventure lovers. There are a number of water sports here that one can indulge in and the boat rides are loved by all. The picaresque beach also makes for a great spot for photography. A 300 year old fort, known as the Durum- Janjira Fort is also located here.
Considered as the finest of the beaches in the vicinity, the Mandwa Beach is an exceptionally beautiful beach and is considered one of the best tourist destinations in Alibaug. The weather is always pleasant here and the chirping of birds can be heard all day. One can see the Gateway of India from the beach, which makes it so special. There are large orchards of coconut trees that form a lovely backdrop.
The Kolaba Fort is still considered mysterious and the stories surrounding the fort are what makes it so attractive. It is quite an experience to explore this fort and it is located just a couple of kilometers away from the shores of Alibaug. The fort itself is about 25 feet high and there are two main entrances to the fort, one of them from towards the water. This gate is difficult to access during the monsoons. Another attraction is the Siddhivinayak temple which is situated inside the fort. Entry is only INR 5 and the fort is open from 9 am to 6 pm.
Kashid Beach is considered to be the cleanest in the region and not without a reason. One can swim in the clean and fresh waters here and the air is beautifully clean. There are a number of Casurina trees lining the beaches and tourists love walking through them. Although the beach is about 30 km from the main city of Alibaug, the trip is worth it. There are also a number of provisions for engaging in a number of water sports here.
If you are a lover of adventure water sports, then the Nagaon Beach is sure to appeal to you. The beach has an amazing grove of Cypress trees and the waters here are crystal clear. The beach is about 3 km long and all along the beach there are activities like snorkeling and scuba diving taking place. The coral reefs here are magnificent and are quite a sight. The sunset at the beach is particularly stunning because of the wonderful orange hue that drenches the beach.
Touted as one of the most famous tourist places in Alibaug, the forest has a very rich collection of flora and fauna and the climate here is very cool. In fact, the weather is perfectly impeccable throughout the year and visiting the forest during the monsoons also brings out its wild beauty. The beach is located on the Konkan coast and what makes the tourists come here more often is the temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the hill bear Mapgaon village, one has to climb 750 steps to reach the temple that is located at a height of 1200 feet.
Considered quite an ancient tourist spot in the region, the Khanderi Fort, formally known as the Kanhoji Angre Island, was built by Shivaji and is located about 5 m from the south of Maharashtra and it is about 20 km south of Mumbai. Another fort, known as the Underi Fort and is considered to be sister fort, is also located close by.
The Revdanda Fort is located by the Revdanda Village is and it is about 17 km away from Alibaug. The beach has the breeze blowing from the direction of the fort, which is very stunning. There are plenty of coconut trees to be seen here, along with beetle nut plantations. A rare species of plants, known as the Bakuli in local language, is also grown here and lends a very beautiful fragrance to the region. The fort itself is quite an impressive architecture and is a joy to explore.
Located very close to the main town of Alibaug, the Akshi Beach is long and has clear golden sand that seems to blaze with a golden hue during sunrise and sunset. The beach itself is lined with Suru trees and it also happens to be one of the most isolated beaches here. So if you are on the lookout for some secluded spot, away from tourists and weekenders, then you have to visit this beach. The main attraction here is to see the local people go about their daily work.
Located about 3 km from the Alibaug Bus Depot, this is one of the easiest beaches to reach and one of the reasons why it remains crowded for the major part of the year. The white sandy beaches are however, very pristine and it is a joy to catch a glimpse of the sea from here. You can simply sip of the drinks and coconut water available on the shore, and the mouthwatering food sold in the shacks here and just has a wonderful time with your friends and family.
The Rewas jetty is the main point of the Mumbai Launch Service and is located just 23 km from Alibaug. There are jetty services available from many areas in and around Mumbai and Alibaug from here and it is why the place is a little crowded. In fact, even if you do not want to travel yourself, you can simply come here and watch the other passengers come and go and you would not even realize how time passed. There are many bungalows belonging to celebrities here. Vacationers come here almost round the year.
Established in the year 1904, the Observatory was established by the British and is one of the kind in Asia, and one of the only 13 present in the rest of the world. The magnetic observatory provides geomagnetic data and is the foremost of such observatories around the world. There are two buildings housed here and the first of them has the magnetometers that record the geomagnetic fields and the second has precision recording instruments which provides data for geomagnetic storms. A trip here is very interesting and educational.
No trip can be complete without some shopping and the Raigadi Bazar will be the one stop destination for all your needs. Located just 1 km from the Alibaug Beach, the place is a mini- market for all the travelers and everything from shoes, bags, handicrafts, junk jewelry and food items are to be found here. The food shacks here are especially famous and this is the best place to buy knickknacks for your friends back home. The items are available at very cheap prices though some amount of bargaining can be needed at peak seasons.
