Follow watery trails to mythological cities at the sacred island of Beyt Dwarka. An island believed to be part of the lost city of Dwarka and focal point for many events surrounding Krishna’s life – where he lived, met his friend Sudama, where Meera Bai supposedly spent her last days. It’s no wonder why Beyt Dwarka is one of the most famous places to visit in Dwarka, both for pilgrims and tourists. The temple contains the main Dwarkadhish deity, believed to be made by none other than Queen Rukmini herself.
Take a bus to Okha, 30 km away and make your way to the jetty, where a ferry will take you across to the island. With seagulls soaring above, shimmering waters around, and open skies – this is a ferry ride to remember!
The island’s white sandy beaches are also perfect for picnics, dolphin spotting, water sports, or for some good old-fashioned contemplation by the sea.
Arrive early in the morning to also visit the Hanuman Mandir at Beyt Dwarka. The temple is believed to be the place where Hanuman fought with his son Makaradhwaja.
One of the best places to visit in Dwarka involves an unmissable audience with its reigning queen. Located 2 km outside the city is the beautiful Rukmini Temple. Dedicated to Rukmini, wife of Lord Krishna, the temple is built on a mythological story of sorrow. It is said that Rukmini invited the wrath of the sage Durvasa, who cursed her with separation from her husband, Krishna. The temple’s location on the outskirts of the city speaks to Rukmini’s banishment. Some believe that the same curse turned the water in Dwarka city salty.

A temple fit for the ‘King of Dwarka’, Dwarkadhish is an architectural marvel of limestone and sand. Supported by 60 columns, a towering spire with intricate carvings, and beautifully decorated gateways, this magnificent temple is one of the most sacred religious sites in the country. An interesting sight to witness here is the colorful flag-changing ceremony. The 52-yard flag at the temple is changed five times every day, thrice in the morning and twice in the evening. Watch the theatre unfold as families sponsoring the flag march in a ceremonial procession, accompanied by lively singing and dancing! There is resounding cheering and clapping, as the flag is changed and flutters happily in the wind.
The Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple is one of the 12 major temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located between Dwarka and Beyt Dwarka Island, the temple contains one of the 12 Swayambhuor (or self-manifested) Jyotirlingas in the world. The major attractions here are a 25 m tall statue of Lord Shiva in a sitting position, as well as a beautiful garden with a pond. The temple is just a 30-minute drive outside the city.
Head westwards to the Samudra Narayan Mandir, a temple that stands next to the waters of the Arabian Sea and is devoted to Lord Krishna. After a visit to the temple to seek blessings, take a long moment to watch the sunset and perhaps count those blessings as well.
One of the must-visit places in this holy city, the Bhadkeshwar Mahadev Temple will envelop you with its serenity. Evening aarti, uninterrupted views of the Arabian Sea, with stretches of golden sand surrounding it; the temple is sure to take you that much closer to the divine.
Stop and stare
After a whirlwind sightseeing trip in Dwarka, make your way to the Gomti Ghat for a moment of peace. People often say it is a must to take a dip in these holy waters, before visiting the Dwarkadhish temple nearby. From here, you can watch the Gomti river make its way slowly to meet the Arabian Sea, a completely mesmerizing sight.
Gopi Talav is a lake located 20 km from Dwarka, on the way to Beyt Dwarka. It is said that the Gopis of Vrindavan, unable to bear the distance from Krishna, made their way to Dwarka and offered themselves to the soil of the land around. Tourists often carry back ‘Gopi Chandan’ or a token of the soil from around the lake, which is believed to contain magical healing properties.
Visit the LightHouse for stunning panoramic views of the city and the Arabian sea. Located 3.5 km from the main town, the Lighthouse is one of the best tourist places in Dwarka. A perfect vantage point to enjoy the sea breeze, the waters crashing into the coast, or watch small fishing boats bobbing up and down in the water. The Lighthouse was constructed in 1962 and is a crucial landmark for sailors even today.
Dunny Point is a hidden gem located towards the extreme end of Beyt Dwarka. Head to this little-known paradise when you’ve had enough of temple hopping. Dunny Point is an ecotourism site where you can explore the richness of marine biodiversity and corals along the Gujarat coast. Laze around on the beach, go for a swim, or participate in one of the activities organized by adventure companies here: camping, night trekking, or dolphin spotting. For a truly memorable time in Dwarka, take a ride on the colorful Chhakda! This unique vehicle is a part motorcycle and part carriage, powered by a 500 cc Diesel Royal Enfield engine. The Chhakda is a chariot of ‘Jugaad’ and can comfortably carry more than 20 people. This brilliant invention was born out of necessity, to meet the public transportation needs of people living in small desert villages in Gujarat and their unforgivable terrain. The front looks like any other motorcycle, while the back is fitted with a two-wheeled carriage.
Authentic Gujarati food or a typical Gujarati thali is your best bet for good cuisine in Dwarka. And while you’re in Dwarka, it would be criminal to miss out on local snacks like dhokla, Phafada, Khandavii, and Thepla.
Some of the most popular restaurants in Dwarka are: Blue Coriander, Indus Express, Chappan Bhog Multi-Cuisine Restaurant, Govinda Multi-Cuisine Restaurant, the Grand Radhey, Evergreen, and Prasad. These are all located in major markets and centers across Dwarka.
The most popular souvenir from Dwarka is the image of Dwarkadhish himself, whose memories you can take back in a glass box or a photograph. The Chakrashila is also a great memento you can pick up from the city. These are small stones with circular formations, which are essentially corals from the sea. The ‘Gopi Chandan’ or dried soil from Gopi Talav is one of the most popular souvenirs in Dwarka. It can be found at any souvenir shops across the city.
As with all things in Gujarat, the local markets in Dwarka are brimming with treasures and color. Look out for Patola silk, embroidered handicrafts and footwear, the Bandhani or folk art typical to the state, ghagra cholis, and fabrics decorated with sequins and mirror chunks.
