Are you tired of the mundane life that you are living? Are you tired of all the deadlines and meetings and just want to have a holiday? Well, if you are in any of these conditions, you surely do need a holiday and Dhanushkodi, the “lost land” of Tamil Nadu, is the perfect place for that. This serene island like patch of land which connects India and Sri Lanka provides the most picturesque view that is sure to take someone’s breath away. This almost barren stretch of land can take you to a state of calm that will help you get rid of all the stress and hustle bustle of the city life.
The best time to visit this beach town is ideally the months of October, November and February but anytime between the months from October to March should be fine. The weather remains constant and the heat is not as much as the summer months, which helps one to go around feeling less uneasy.
Dhanushkodi used to be a very popular port town, but after the cyclone of 1964 hit its shores and killed more than thousand people, the government of Tamil Nadu declared it as a ghost town which was unfit for living. But still it became a popular destination for holidays and people can easily reach this place by taking the train. Dhanushkodi does not have a railway station of its own, but the nearest railway station is Rameshwaram which lies approximately 21 kilometres from the town. From there one can take the government aided jeeps offered by Dhanushkodi Tourism upto the beach. But I’d suggest one can take the local vehicles to reach the beach as well as they cost you lesser. The distance from the major cities to Dhanushkodi is not extremely huge; hence using your own car to drive upto there is not a bad idea as well.

It is impossible for you to never have seen that blue sea wallpaper that comes with every windows program. Remember that one? It’s called azure and if you have ever wondered where that place is, then brace yourselves because I have your answer. Right here in the Dhanushkodi Beach, you will see that. This whole place is something that one has to see for themselves in order to understand its beauty. The clear water and amazing beach is something that one may make one wonder, if any such place exists on the face of earth or not. There are no huge structures or hotels, no litter, it’s just clear blue sea and the road that leads up to the sea offers the best sceneries. The overpopulated metropolitan cities are a stark contrast to Dhanushkodi with their less population which offers its visitors peace of mind and tranquillity like no one else.
Remember how Lord Ram built a bridge with the help of the army of monkey’s in order to reach Lanka and save his wife, Sita from the clutches of the evil king, Ravan? This is thought to be the same bridge which is also known as the “Ram Setu” according to Hindu mythology, the later king of Lanka persuaded Lord Ram to break off the bridge and Ram did so, which gave the town it’s name. There have been satellite images produced by the NASA which indicate the presence of a bridge underneath the waters connecting Sri Lanka and India.
It is better known as the Rameshwaran Island, it is situated in between the India and Sri Lanka. This island is also a famous pilgrimage centre. The list of temples in Rameswaram is never ending. The Hanuman temple seems to have stones floating in front of it, which again makes mythological stories stronger.
It is indeed a wonder. This bridge is right now the second longest sea bridge and was India’s first sea bridge. This bridge shows great architectural excellence, it is on the pal strait and connects Rameshwaram with the Indian subcontinent. Unfortunately the bridge suffered a major damage in the year 1964, after the cyclone hit Dhanushkodi. But the bridge again got reconstructed within a span of just 48 days.
At the end of the beach you will be able to see what you have probably never seen before. At this point the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal converge and it is the most breathtaking view ever. The clear blue water of the Indian Ocean meets the green and serene water of the Bay of Bengal. The convergence is so natural, yet differentiating between the two waters is so easy. It looks as if nature is trying to mix colours and paint a beautiful picture.
Beach lovers, this is one beach you absolutely need to have on your list and there is no way you can afford to not see this. The seashore is not at all dirty, it is clean and pure. Most happening part is that the tides are not very high and the sand is very soft. Being a football lover, I could only think of playing a round of football or volleyball along the bay with my friends.
If you are on the lookout for biodiversity, well here’s your chance. Being a nature lover myself, I could not resist but visit this national park, it is not exactly in Dhanushkodi, but it is easy to reach these islands from there.
After the cyclone in December 1964, more than a thousand people, including people approaching the island via a train on the Pamban Bridge died and the whole area turned in to a barren land. The government declared this place as the ghost town and no one is allowed to go to the beach after 6 pm as people have experienced paranormal activities. It is true that as darkness ascends the stories of Dhanushkodi, will feel chills, the serene blue sea turns darker and the surroundings can give you an eerie feeling.
