A preliminary investigation for the Tehri Dam project was completed in 1961, and its design was completed in 1972. Construction began in 1978 after feasibility studies but was delayed due to financial, environmental and social impacts. However, in 1988 the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation was formed to manage the dam, and the construction started in full-swing, the result of which is in front of us now. This year, 2019, the three-day festival was held in February from 26th to 28th February. The motive behind this festival is to inculcate and celebrate the spirit of adventure and promote Tehri tourism. This loved lake came into existence in 1978 when one of the World’s highest dams, Tehri Dam, was being constructed. And till this day has been a perfect boating destination for people on a family vacation looking to revel in the relaxing environment and enjoy boating at the lake.
The adventure activities that one can enjoy at the Tehri Adventure Tourism Festival include paragliding, kayaking, river rafting, jet-skiing, banana rides, surfing, canoeing, rowing, and boating among others. Tehri Dam is situated at a distance of 300 km and 110 km from Delhi and Dehradun respectively. The government is planning to promote adventure tourism at Tehri Dam and is taking some big initiatives for the same. Koti Colony will act as the administrative unit to promote all adventure-related activities. Tehri Dam is at a distance of just 20km from the Koti Colony and can be reached via Chamba. By Air: Located at a distance of around 87 km, Jolly Grant Airport also known as Dehradun Airport is the nearest airport to reach New Tehri. Cabs are easily available from Dehradun to New Tehri.
By Rail: Deboard at Rishikesh railway station to reach New Tehri as it is situated some 73 km away from your destination. Taxis and buses from the railway station are easily available.
By Road: As New Tehri is well connected via roads, it’s easy to reach here via buses and taxis from places in Uttarakhand like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Devprayag, Srinagar, Uttarkashi and more.
