Roopkund Lake found in Uttarakhand, also commonly known as the Mystery Lake, as the name suggests, is a sight for sore eyes for those who like a taste of adventure. Roopkund trekking, elevated on the laps of the Mt.Trishul, at an estimated altitude of 16,499 ft. What adds this place to the wonder list are the numerous human skeletons discovered lying at the bottom of the lake, which makes for a distinct natural spectacle when the snow melts. Lay your eyes to the chilling surroundings, gurgling brooks, fresh air and breath-taking campsites along this amazing trek as you stir your brain cells wondering about the skeletons!

2. Bhandardara Dam, Ahmednagar

Bhandardara Dam, also known as Wilson Dam, situated in the Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra, is one of those offbeat places straight out of a William Wordsworth poem. It is a very quiet place by all means. The Bhandardara Lake is formed due to the construction of this dam and is fed by the Parava River. There is a large circular waterfall, also called “Umbrella Falls” because of its peculiar shape, which appears only from July to October, and is situated about 500 kms from the Bhandardara bus station. Its pristine ambience is complete with the serene waterfalls, lush green mountains and clean air scented with peace. Cannot decide where to spend your autumn? 3. Majuli, Assam

Majuli Assam

Majuli, a river island in Assam, is a region often overlooked by tourists. This island, encircled by the gushing waters of river Brahmaputra, has been isolated for years. This place is so cut off from the rest of the country that the only way to reach there are ferries, that too during daylight hours. It took no less than three boats to traverse the numerous wetlands and streams and reach the ferry point from one of the island’s central towns, only a decade ago. This place only saw mobile phones and plastic packaging in 2009 and is still in the process of building roads and bridges through the farmlands and forests. This island is said to be disappearing, as good things do. This is a place that is too good to be true. Visit while you still can!                                              

4. Athirapally, Kochi

Athirapally houses the largest waterfall in Kerala and this is located 78 km from Kochi, at the entrance to the Shoryar Ranges. The waterfall is about 80 ft high and located in the forest area, it presents the onlookers with a sight to behold. The picturesque Vazhachal Waterfall is close, only at a distance of 5 kms, and is a part of the Chalakuddy River. All of these combine to make a scene straight out of a Bollywood movie! In fact the song “Barso re Megha” from the film Guru (2007) was shot here, giving you all the more reason to visit this place lesser known wonder of the place. This is a must visit place in Kerala if you are looking for a tranquil escape for your tired soul.

5. Kodinhi, Kerala

Kodinhi, a village situated in Kerala’s Malappuram district, is one of the strangest and secret places in India and a mystery unsolved, which continues to awe the researchers. Why? This village is reported to have the largest number of twins in the country. Statistics say that there are at least 400 pairs of twins in a village with a population of only 2000 or so. The locals say that this phenomenon dates way back to 1949. Some scientists have linked this continuous occurrence to a chemical found in the local water, which however was later dismissed by various other doctors and scientists. The villagers however embrace this phenomenon and even dress identically to honor this. Have your own theories about this place? Pack your bags fast.
