Top Frosty Festivals In The USA

The desire to retrogress to warmer temperatures is all too familiar among winter tourists. However, detouring the cold may drive you to miss the country’s most fun, authentic, and memorable festive events during winter. To ensure you are convinced and not planning a separate retreat, here is a list of the most famous frosty festivals in the USA with their details.

1. Dartmouth Winter Carnival

Also known as the “30-ring circus,” the Dartmouth Winter Carnival is a prominent winter festival in New England. The students of Dartmouth College, Hanover, in New Hampshire, conduct the winter festival. Among the lights and great food, there are numerous fun activities that you can participate in. The list of amusements includes sleigh rides, ski races, polar swims, human dog-sledge races, and ice skating. You also get to experience live musical performances and a quantity of libations.

2. Oregon WinterFest

Formerly famous as the Bend Winterfest, the Oregon Winterfest dates back to 1999. The attractive games and endless fun offered have helped it become one of Oregon’s largest winter festivals. Oregon Winterfest attracts international and local crowds. It is organized on the leeward side of the eastern Cascade Mountains, along the banks of River Deschutes. Some fun activities include Snow Warriors contesting an outdoor obstacle course, artisan fire pits, snow sculptures, kid-centric activities held by the Museum of Science and Industry, Oregon, and a wine walk.

3. Newport Winter Festival

Newport coastal town is regarded as one of the classiest locations in Rhode Island. The place is also the main spot for the Newport Winter Festival, one of New England’s most elaborate winter extravaganzas since the 1980s. The 10-day long festival comprises 150+ individual events. The list has a different vibe, from a children’s fair to a chili cook-off and a “Beatlemania” concert. Also, visitors participate in sandcastle-making and ice-sculpting competitions in this carnival and win exciting prizes.

4. Saint Paul Winter Carnival

It is the oldest of all the frosty festivals in the U.S. The 10-day Saint Paul Winter Carnival celebrates the true essence of winter through age-old traditional activities and some recently added. The festival includes fire and ice runs, carving competitions, parades, live entertainment, scavenger hunts, and educational activities. Also, there is a Royal Coronation of King Boreas, the gracious Monarch of Ice and Snow. His Royal Guards, the Queen of the Snows – Aurora, and the four Wind Princesses and Princes follow him.

5. Fire & Ice Winterfest

The Fire & Ice Winterfest is organized in February. You can just pack with your friends or family and plan a trip to the quaint resort town of Idaho, famous for its natural hot pools. Among the major attractions, you should not miss out on the polar bear costume judging party, chili tasting, and running of the bulls. On the festival’s last day, a race is organized from one hot spring to the other through downtown.

6. Fur Rendezvous

It is a 975-mile dog-sledding race pre-dating the Iditarod. The race starts in Anchorage annually and is affectionately known as “Fur Rondy.” Some key events during the frosty festival are the Native American blanket toss, an official auction, an outdoor hockey tournament, the World Champion Sled Dog Race, outhouse races, and a local mushing contest.

7. Ely Winter Festival

Popularly celebrated as a 10-day winter extravaganza, the Ely Winter Festival initially began as a ski race (cross-country) in 1984. Important festival events are the Ely ArtWalk, the International Snow Sculpting Symposium, and a non-competitive event for professional artists. Also, you can visit the downtown area to explore unique art pieces by local artists, which are only available now. Adding more to the zeal, there are guided snowshoe tours to the Listening Point.

8. Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is historically linked to the biggest lake, originally used to rejuvenate and rest in the later part of the 19th century. Started since 1897 as a 1-day event, the festival, with time, has been promoted to a 10-day carnival. The primary attraction of the festival is its volunteer-built Ice Palace. It was introduced in the initial days of the carnival and is still carried forward as a consistent tradition. A castle built using ice blocks. While here, you will notice a snowy owl mascot and a royal court. Some of the festivities include parades, fireworks, performances, and fry pan tosses.
