Erode is the seventh-largest urban agglomeration in Tamil Nadu. It is believed that the name Erode was derived from the Tamil phrase Eru Odai, which means two streams. This might refer to the presence of two water bodies of Erode, Perumpallam and Kalingarayan Canal. It is also believed that the term was derived from another Tamil phrase Eera Odu meaning wet skull, the mention of which can be found in Indian mythology.
Erode is known for its colorful markets, vibrant culture, happy people, and turmeric, the subtle fragrance of which can be felt everywhere, even in the busy markets. A perfect blend of natural beauty and traditions, Erode has an essence of warmth attached to it. The meandering Kaveri and Bhawani rivers surrounding the city on both sides enrich its scenic beauty, making it one of the most attractive travel destinations for nature lovers, history buffs, and adventure seekers. Erode is an ancient city that has been ruled by several kingdoms including the Cheras, Cholas, Tipu Sultan, and finally, the British. It is situated at a distance of approximately 260 km from Bengaluru, 100 kilometers from Coimbatore, and 400 kilometers from Chennai. Erode is a city dotted with various tourist attractions. With temples, churches, forts, sanctuaries and tiger reserves- it caters to every kind of traveler.
Places to see in Erode
One of the most popular attractions in Erode is the Thindal Murugan Temple. It is a popular place of worship and is flocked by thousands of pilgrims every year. This 750-year-old temple is one of the most visited religious places in Erode. It served as the chief place of worship during the era of the Mysore Kingdom. If the legend is to be believed, this area was suffering from years and years of drought. Only after Lord Murugan blessed the region, did this region find relief from the long-drawn draught. The temple is located atop a hillock, 50 meters above the ground, and one needs to climb 150 steps to reach there. So, if you are interested in paying a visit, make sure you are wearing comfortable walking shoes. Other important places to visit here are the Vellode Bird Sanctuary. These places are perfect for you if you are a nature lover, and wish to spend some time exploring the vast flora and fauna of the region. The Sri Peria Mariamman Temple is also one of the most important temples in this region. It was built 1200 years ago by the Kongu Cholas and is dedicated to Mariamman (a form of Durga), the Hindu Goddess of rain and diseases. It is believed that the goddess cures people of diseases like pox and measles. This temple attracts people from different faiths, most notably Hindus and Christians.
