The city of Amritsar was founded by one of the gurus of the Sikh and his name was guru Ramdas who founded the city in the late 16th century. He bought the land from the landlords of that time and began collecting money to build the holy shrine. When he began his journey to establish the city and the holy shrine, little did he think or imagine that one day the temple would be a symbol of the highest echelon of Sikhism? It was his imagination and the imagination of his was interlaced with the fantasy of a kind that is conjectured once in a millennium. Guru’s fantasy or imagination didn’t remain that; it became a reality and began bearing fruits when people came in droves to put their shoulders behind the project. The zamindars or rulers of that era were the ones who donated land for building the colossal structure of the temple. The zamindars too began having a share in the imagination and dream of guru, but one thing was really true and that was the honest intention and absolute passion. Guru Ramdas excelled in appealing to people’s self-interest because unless that happens nobody come forward to help you with a project or something no matter how gigantic or noble the purpose is. He had other novel ideas about the overall design of the temple and so he began implementing his ideas after convincing people about them. We should remember that it was the time Sikhism was taking deep roots in those days and it had to have structures and practices about the place of worship which was distinct from Hindu temple. So, instead of one door, there were four doors or entrances to the temple. The idea was that it would signal plurality and non-discrimination, and the true intent was people from all faith from all geographical areas would come to the shrine without any barrier or refusal. A tank or Sarovar was built which was later expanded. There are hotels in Harmandir Sahib Amritsar and in Amritsar there are OYO rooms also for your stay.
