A visit to Lal Bagh Palace should definitely be on every tourist’s itinerary. The palace was built between 1886 and 1921 and is among the finest buildings left behind by the Holkar dynasty. One will be quite surprised to find Buckingham Palace-like gates that open to the 28-hectare garden. One can find a statue of Queen Victoria situated close to the palace. The palace is European in style, replete with rococo and dining rooms, an English library with armchairs in leather, a Renaissance sitting room as well as a Palladian queen’s bedroom. An autorickshaw from the city centre will take you to the palace. The Central Museum is also among the popular tourist destinations in the city. The museum is located in the Holkar building. It is home to some of Madhya Pradesh’s best medieval and pre-medieval Hindu sculptures. One can also find a wide collection of tools, weapons and copper-engraved land titles. There were a number of skirmishes that took place during the First War of Independence (Indian Uprising). In fact, the well situated in the garden was poisoned during the uprising. One can also take a tour of Gandhi Hall. This Gothic structure was built in 1904 and was originally know as King Edward’s Hall. There are a number of beautiful statutes one can catch a glimpse of during their stay in the hotel. The statues of Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Nehru are all works of art.
