The stunning state of Madhya Pradesh is a treasure of untouched destinations and surreal beauty. From grand palaces, forts, and exotic wildlife spotting, to ancient temples and colorful festivals, bustling cities, and quiet villages. A trip to Madhya Pradesh is always full of surprises.

Take the quaint city of Sagar, for instance. Its original name Sougar combines the words ‘Sou’ (hundred) with ‘Garh’ (forts), alluding to times when numerous small forts dotted the entire region. Sagar is a beautiful weekend getaway from Bhopal, located 200 km away from the capital city. An easy drive away from the chaos of the city will bring you to Sagar’s pristine waterfalls, cascading lakes, and ancient temples.

Sagar is called Lake City for a good reason! The gorgeous Lakha Banjara Lake and its peaceful waters are a popular attraction in the city With rapid development and urbanization taking over, the lake offers a refreshing spot of calm and fresh air for the residents of the city.

Revisit ancient history with a trip to the beautiful Pateria Ji temple in Garhakota. The temple is dedicated to Lord Parshvanath and considered to be one of the most sacred religious sites for the Jains. With idols 7 feet high and spires that tower 50 feet above, the temple is a remarkable sight to behold. To further enrich your knowledge of Jainism and its history, visit the Neminagar Jain Tirth – an ancient temple dedicated to Acharya Nemi Sagar Ji Maharaj and built by his disciple.

Another site worth paying a visit to is the town of Makronia. It contains a dargah of Bujurg Hazrat Sayyed Makraan Saha Wali Rahmatullah Alleh. Makronia is also home to the fabled Osho Hill, where Acharya Rajneesh himself is believed to have spent time doing meditation.

Eran is an archaeological site containing remnants of an ancient town going back to the 5th and 6th Centuries Gupta dynasty. Its prime attraction is a massive stone boar with depictions of sages and scholars on the body of the sculpture.

Sagar is blessed with pretty hills all around. Take a drive outside the city and explore places such as the Rahatgarh waterfalls, the Garhphra temples, and the Khimlasa fort. Immerse yourself in rural life at the beautiful villages of Khurai, Sahajpur, and Deor.
